It's a Sunday night. There's a brew going cold on the arm of the sofa, and the two of you have nine wedding photographers open in nine tabs. One is ÂŁ600, the next is ÂŁ2,500, and both websites say "natural" and "relaxed". It's not obvious what the difference is, and it feels a bit awkward to ask.
So this is the post I'd want to read if I was planning my own wedding. Honest numbers, what actually changes the price, where the money goes, and how to work out what's right for the two of you. I'm a wedding photographer based in Guisborough and most of my weddings are across Teesside, North Yorkshire and the wider North East, so that's the patch I'm talking about. No sales pitch, just the useful bits, and the odd opinion.
Quick answer: Couples in the north-east of England spend just over ÂŁ1,400 on a complete wedding photography package, according to Hitched's 2025 prices guide, against a UK average of ÂŁ1,500 for 2024 weddings. What really moves the price is how much of the day is covered, a second photographer, albums and travel. My own collections start from ÂŁ1,295 for half-day coverage and ÂŁ1,695 for a full day.
What do North East couples actually spend?
The most useful figures I've found come from Hitched's 2025 wedding photography prices guide. Based on their research and couples' reviews, couples in the north-east of England spend just over ÂŁ1,400 on complete photography packages, which include editing and some extras such as pre-wedding shoots. In London, the same figure is just over ÂŁ2,000. For a wider view, Hitched's National Wedding Survey puts the average cost of a wedding photographer across the UK at ÂŁ1,500 for weddings in 2024.
So if you're getting married in Teesside, County Durham or North Yorkshire, somewhere around ÂŁ1,400 is a realistic middle point for a complete package. That's not a target and it's not a rule. Some couples spend less and some spend more, and both can be exactly the right call. The point of knowing the average is simply that it helps you spot when something is unusually low or unusually high, and ask why. For the bigger picture of where photography sits in a whole wedding budget, the Hitched average wedding cost guide and Bridebook wedding trends are both worth a look, though their figures are updated regularly. If you'd like to see how prices have moved over the last few years, I've also written about average wedding photography prices in the UK and the cost of hiring a documentary wedding photographer.
It's also worth saying that an average hides a lot. A small register office wedding with a meal afterwards and a big country house day with a hundred and twenty guests and a dance floor that refuses to empty are very different jobs, even if they're both "a wedding".
Every wedding is different, so if you'd like a straight answer on what yours would cost with me, Tell Me About Your Wedding and I'll come back with an honest recommendation, even if that's the smaller collection.
What actually changes the price?
Every photographer prices a bit differently, but a handful of things really move the number. Once you know what they are, comparing quotes gets a lot less confusing.
How much of the day you want covered
This is the big one. Hitched's 2025 guide notes that 4 to 5 hour packages generally cover up to the wedding breakfast, while a typical 8 to 9 hour day usually takes you up to the first dance. If you want the nervous laughter while you're getting ready, the ceremony, the drinks reception, the speeches and at least some of the dancing, you're looking at a full day. If you're having a small, simple wedding followed by a meal, a shorter package may cover everything you care about, and there's no sense paying for hours you don't need.
A second photographer
A second photographer means both of you can have your getting ready photographed at the same time, and you get two angles on the ceremony. For big weddings with two busy getting-ready houses it can make a real difference. For a small, relaxed wedding it often isn't needed, and I'd always tell you honestly if I didn't think it was worth it.
Albums and prints
Some packages include an album and some don't. I'll admit I'm a bit evangelical about albums, because digital files have a habit of disappearing into a phone and never coming out again. An album is the thing your nieces and nephews pull off the shelf in twenty years. But it does add to the cost, so check what's included when you compare quotes.
Travel and timing
Most local photographers include travel within a certain distance, so if you're booking someone from further afield, there may be mileage or an overnight stay to add. Dates matter too. Saturdays between May and September are the busiest days of the year for everyone. Some photographers have lower prices for weekdays or quieter months, which is always worth asking about, but don't expect huge discounts, because the work involved is the same.
Where does the money actually go?
It's easy to assume a wedding photographer is paid for one long day of work. In reality the wedding is only the part you see. Hitched's 2025 guide estimates a photographer takes around 5,000 to 7,000 shots on a typical wedding day, then chooses the best 650 to 800 to edit, which can take three or four days on its own.
Before the day there are planning chats about timings and family photo lists, travel, and sometimes a venue visit. After it, every image gets backed up in more than one place, because losing someone's wedding photos is the stuff of photographer nightmares. Underneath all of that sit professional cameras and lenses, backup kit in case something fails, insurance, editing software, online galleries and album design. When a price looks very low, it's usually because some of that is missing, or because the photographer is just starting out. That can still be fine, as long as you know what you're getting.
What my packages look like
I keep my collections simple. Half-day photography starts from ÂŁ1,295, covering from 45 minutes before the ceremony until after the first dance. Full-day photography with a pre-wedding shoot and a handmade album starts from ÂŁ1,695, and a full day with an album and a wedding film is from ÂŁ2,295. You can see exactly what's in each one on my packages page. Every full-day collection includes sneak peeks within 24 hours and travel throughout North Yorkshire and the North East. On a full day I don't work to a clock, so if the dance floor is still full, I'm not packing up just because a certain hour has arrived.
The way I work matters as much as the price. Most of the day I'm in the background, capturing what happens naturally. Family photos take about fifteen minutes, because there's a method: you two stay in one spot and I bring people in and out, starting with the biggest group. Couple portraits take about twenty minutes, with calm guidance rather than awkward posing. The rest of the time is yours to spend with your guests.
If you're not sure which collection suits your day, that's completely normal. Tell me a bit about your plans and I'll give you an honest recommendation. If you’d like a film of the day as well, have a look at my wedding photography and film coverage.
The worries couples usually have about cost
A lot of couples feel awkward asking a photographer for prices, as if it's slightly rude. It isn't. It's the first thing most people ask me, and it's a completely sensible question. A good photographer will tell you clearly what's included without making you feel like you've wandered into a car showroom.
Another common worry is that spending less means worse photos. Not necessarily. Price reflects experience, time and what's included, but the real test is whether you love someone's photos and feel comfortable with them. If both of those are true and the price works for you, you've probably found your person.
And if your budget is genuinely tight, it's much better to say so early. There's often a sensible way to adjust coverage, such as fewer hours or no album, rather than cutting something you'll regret.
How to get good value without cutting corners
Start by working out which parts of the day matter most to you. If the evening party isn't a big deal, you might not need coverage until midnight. Keep your timeline sensible too, because a day with fewer long gaps means less dead time and more time with your guests.
When the quotes come in, compare like with like. One might include an album and a pre-wedding shoot while another doesn't, and that can easily account for a few hundred pounds. Look at full galleries, not just highlights, because any photographer can show you their twenty best photos. A complete wedding shows you how they handle the bits that aren't golden hour. And check they're insured and experienced. You want someone calm who can deal with rain, tight timings and the family photos without anyone noticing a wobble.
Questions worth asking any photographer
How many weddings have you photographed, and is this your full-time job?
What's included, and what costs extra?
How long until the full gallery arrives?
Do you have backup equipment and public liability insurance?
What happens if you're ill on the day?
Can I see a full gallery from a venue like ours?
If you want more on this, I've written a longer list of questions to ask your wedding photographer.
Is it worth it?
I'm biased, obviously. But the photos are one of the few things from your wedding you'll actually keep. The flowers wilt, the cake gets eaten, and the day goes by in a happy blur. The photos are how you'll remember who was there, how your grandparents looked, and the exact moment your best friend lost it during the speeches.
What matters most isn't spending the most money. It's finding someone whose photos you love and who you'd be happy to have around all day. My job is to keep things relaxed, give you calm guidance when you need it, and capture the real moments while you get on with having a brilliant day with your people.
Questions couples ask
How much does a wedding photographer cost in the North East?
Hitched's 2025 wedding photography prices guide says couples in the north-east of England spend just over ÂŁ1,400 on complete photography packages, including editing and some extras such as pre-wedding shoots. In London it's just over ÂŁ2,000. Treat ÂŁ1,400 as a realistic middle point rather than a target: it helps you spot when a quote is unusually low or high, and ask why.
How many hours of wedding photography do we need?
Hitched's guide notes that 4 to 5 hour packages generally cover up to the wedding breakfast, while 8 to 9 hours usually takes you up to the first dance. If you want getting ready, the ceremony, the speeches and some dancing, you're looking at a full day. A small, simple wedding followed by a meal may need less, and there's no sense paying for hours you don't need.
Why does wedding photography cost what it does?
The wedding is only the part you see. Hitched estimates a photographer takes around 5,000 to 7,000 shots on a typical day, then edits the best 650 to 800, which can take three or four days. Add planning chats, travel, backing everything up in more than one place, professional and backup kit, insurance, software, galleries and album design.
What do your wedding packages cost?
Half-day photography starts from ÂŁ1,295, covering from 45 minutes before the ceremony until after the first dance. Full-day photography with a pre-wedding shoot and a handmade album starts from ÂŁ1,695, and a full day with an album and a wedding film is from ÂŁ2,295. A ÂŁ100 booking fee holds your date, and my packages page shows exactly what's in each one.
Is a cheaper wedding photographer a bad idea?
Not necessarily. Price reflects experience, time and what's included, but the real test is whether you love someone's photos and feel comfortable with them. When a price looks very low, it's usually because something is missing or the photographer is just starting out. That can still be fine, as long as you compare like with like and know what you're getting.
About me
I'm Aaron, a wedding photographer based in Guisborough. I photograph weddings across North Yorkshire, Teesside and the North East in a natural, documentary way: I tell the story of your day as it happens, so you can spend it with your people rather than posing. You can read more about me, or get in touch whenever you're ready.
Let's Talk About Your Plans
If you're a warm, sociable couple who care about the photos but care even more about having a brilliant day with your people, you're exactly who I love photographing.
Couples are already booking their 2027 photographers, and summer Saturdays tend to go first, so if you've got a date in mind it's worth checking sooner rather than later.
Here's what happens when you get in touch: tell me your date and venue, and I'll let you know if I'm free and send over my packages. If you'd like, I'm happy to have a quick, no-pressure chat on the phone or a video call. If it feels right, a ÂŁ100 booking fee holds your date. If not, no hard feelings at all.
