Newton Hall in one minute: a hotel and wedding venue in Newton-by-the-Sea, near Alnwick, Northumberland (NE66 3DZ). You can marry in the Enchanted Chapel (30 to 150 guests, says the venue), the Garden Suite, the Terrace, on Wedding Hill, in the Great Hall, or on the beach. It's dog-friendly, offers two- and three-day celebrations, and has around 21 bedrooms. I've photographed a wedding at Newton Hall: Joe and Holly's, in the Enchanted Chapel. My full-day collections start at £1,695, and £100 holds your date.

Getting married at Newton Hall

Wedding party on the striped lawn with the gardens behind at Newton Hall, Northumberland

A Newton Hall wedding feels like a weekend away by the sea, even if your guests only stay one night. The hall sits in Newton-by-the-Sea, a small village on the Northumberland coast near Alnwick, with the beach close by and big skies everywhere you look.

The venue gives you a lot of choice. As well as the Enchanted Chapel, there are four other wedding spaces: the Garden Suite, the Terrace, Wedding Hill and the Great Hall. It also offers beach ceremonies. The team describe themselves as "specialists in outdoor weddings, no matter the weather", which is a confident thing to say about the Northumberland coast, and their FAQ mentions a terrace with a retractable roof.

The Garden Suite has a wall of glass with views across the countryside towards the North Sea. That window light is lovely for speeches, as you'll see in the photographs further down this page. Outside, there are stone archways, planted gardens, stone steps beside the house and a striped lawn that's perfect for the wedding party.

It's also properly dog-friendly. In the venue's words, "if you want your four-legged friends to be involved in the wedding ceremony then why not". And it's set up for longer celebrations, with ideas like a rehearsal dinner the night before or a barbecue round the fire pits.

I've photographed a wedding at Newton Hall: Joe and Holly married here in March 2025 with 70 guests, ceremony and reception both at the hall. I'm based in Guisborough and Northumberland is part of my normal area, so travel is included. There's more about my Northumberland wedding photography if you're comparing coastal venues.

Who it suits: couples who want somewhere a bit quirky and full of character, a coastal setting, a dog in the wedding party, or a celebration that runs over more than one day.

Less of a fit if: you want a plain, classic ballroom, or a photographer who spends hours on posed portraits. I mostly stay out of the way and photograph what actually happens.

Capacities, prices and packages change, so check current details with the venue directly.

The Enchanted Chapel

The Enchanted Chapel is what most couples fall for. The venue tells its own story about it: a hidden chapel that had been "whispered about for years", uncovered during building work and restored. However it came to be, the space is lovely. The venue describes "the most luscious indoor garden" of plants and vines, "a stunning waterfall which cascades down ancient rocks" beside the altar, and "enormous floor to ceiling glass doors" that, when opened, "make the Chapel and water one".

It takes from 30 guests for an intimate ceremony up to 150, according to the chapel page. (The venue's FAQ gives 160; check your numbers with them.)

Holly's favourite spot was the end of the aisle, where the doors open and you can see the water feature outside. It's mine too. When you stand there together, you're framed by greenery and light, and your guests are right there with you.

During the ceremony I photograph from the back and the side. I find my spots before guests sit down and I don't move around during the vows. A chapel full of plants gives lovely, soft light, so I don't need to be in anyone's way. What Holly remembers most is Joe crying happy tears at the end of the aisle, and how quickly it all went. That's exactly why I keep my eyes on faces: the tears, the grins, your mum's hand going to her mouth.

The first kiss is a big moment in here. The black-and-white photograph here is Joe and Holly's, with every guest clapping.

A few things that help:

Ask your registrar or celebrant about photography during the ceremony. Most are relaxed, but they all differ.

Walk down the aisle slowly. Holly said she'd love to do it again, slower, to take in everyone's reactions. You've got a photographer for the details, so look up and enjoy it.

After the ceremony, a few minutes at the end of the aisle on your own makes a beautiful, quiet photograph.

Chapel, Wedding Hill, terrace or beach?

Newton Hall offers more ceremony options than most venues, so it helps to know what each one means for your day. Joe and Holly married in the Enchanted Chapel, so the notes on the other spaces come from the venue's own information rather than from a wedding I've photographed there.

Ceremonies on the Northumberland coast

Weather. The coast can be windy even on a sunny day. If you choose Wedding Hill or the beach, agree with the venue in advance when the call is made and where you'll move to. The chapel and the terrace, with its roof, are the obvious fallbacks.

The beach. It's a wonderful idea, but plan the timing: getting everyone down to the beach and back takes longer than you think. If you'd rather marry at the hall, we can still slip down for twenty minutes of beach portraits later, when the light's softer.

My honest view. If the sea matters most to you, go outside and keep the chapel as your plan B. If you'd rather not think about the forecast at all, the Enchanted Chapel is beautiful whatever the weather does.

The best photo spots at Newton Hall

Holly said there are so many areas that are "photo worthy", and I agree. Her own favourite photograph from the day was taken outside, with Joe holding her veil and dress as she walked to the next spot. Everything's close, so twenty minutes of portraits gives you plenty of variety and you're back with your guests before your drink gets warm.

Stone archways

The dark stone archways frame the gardens beautifully. Stand just through one and the arch becomes a natural frame around the two of you, with the planting glowing behind.

The planted gardens

The gardens are full of planting and texture, ideal for a walk-and-talk portrait where you forget I'm there. The photograph here is Joe and Holly laughing together there.

The stone steps

The stone steps beside the house give you the building behind you and a natural tiered shape for family photos, so nobody's hidden at the back.

The staircase

Inside, the staircase with window light is a lovely spot for a bridal portrait while guests head through, and it works in any weather.

A note on March light. Joe and Holly married at the end of March, when the coast is fresh and bright but sunset is around 7.30pm (after the clocks change) and the wind can bite. In early spring, keep the outdoor portraits short and do them soon after the ceremony. Bring a wrap or a jacket you're happy to be photographed in.

Seasons and weather. In spring the gardens are fresh and the evenings are getting longer. Summer gives the longest light and the best chance of a calm beach evening. In autumn the light goes golden early, so an early-afternoon ceremony helps. In winter it's dark by about 4pm, so do the portraits straight after the ceremony and let the chapel's ornate lighting do the rest.

What I'm doing during the day

In the morning I photograph getting ready and the details. Through the drinks reception I'm mostly unseen, photographing people being themselves. After the portraits you're back with your guests. During the meal I step back, then I'm ready for the speeches, the cake and the first dance.

If it rains (or blows) on the coast

Newton Hall is well set up for coastal weather. The Enchanted Chapel and the Garden Suite photograph beautifully whatever's happening outside, and the venue's FAQ describes a terrace with a retractable roof. The staircase and window light inside give you lovely portraits on a grey day.

Wind is the bigger issue here than rain. Veils go sideways, hair gets ideas and nobody wants a family photo where everyone's squinting. If it's blowy, we'll use the shelter of the house and the archways and keep outdoor photographs short. Bring a couple of clear umbrellas for showers. On Joe and Holly's day, a purple drink went all over the dress just before the formal photos. We stayed calm, sorted it and carried on. Weather's much the same: plan for it, then get on with enjoying yourselves.

Rooms, the night before and longer weddings

The venue's FAQ lists 15 doubles in the main hall, up to 21 rooms with the courtyard rooms, and up to six courtyard rooms the night before. Check the current numbers for your date, as they can change. The venue's site today also mentions an exclusive option "when booking all the hotel bedrooms" on selected dates; ask the team about it.

Getting ready here is a treat for photographs. In the bridal suite at Joe and Holly's wedding, the dress hung on an ornate wardrobe, and a sash window gave soft morning light.

Newton Hall also suggests "two or three day festivities": a rehearsal dinner the night before, a barbecue round the fire pits or a picnic on the beach. If you're planning more than one day, tell me what's happening and when, and I'll let you know what I can cover and what it would cost.

Joe and Holly's Newton Hall wedding

Joe and Holly wanted their wedding to feel relaxed and for every single person there to have the most fun. They managed both. Newton Hall was the first venue they saw, and they "fell in love with its bare bones". The day had sage green, homemade glittery biscuit favours, a magician after the meal and a first dance to Islands in the Stream, with every guest joining in. Holly's advice about the venue: "The staff there know exactly what they're doing." The full story is coming soon as Joe and Holly's Newton Hall wedding.
