Thirsk Lodge Barns Weddings: A Photographer’s Guide

Quick answer: Thirsk Lodge Barns is an exclusive-use barn wedding venue in the North Yorkshire countryside, about two miles from Thirsk town centre. Its website says it takes up to 140 guests for the ceremony and wedding breakfast, with room for more in the evening. You move between the Main Barn, the Wheelhouse, the Bar, the Courtyard and the Dining Room as the day goes on, and there's a Farmhouse and Laundry Cottage on site for your closest people.

I'm Aaron, a calm, friendly wedding photographer for relaxed, adventurous couples who'd rather wander through a field with their dog than stand posing for the camera. I've photographed weddings at Thirsk Lodge Barns, and this is the guide I'd want if I were planning one.

Why couples choose Thirsk Lodge Barns

The thing I like most is that the day moves. The venue is made up of several restored barns, so you can have your ceremony in one space, drinks in the Courtyard, your meal in the Dining Room and then the dancing somewhere else. Your guests get a change of scene, and I get a fresh backdrop at each part of the day without anyone having to go far.

It's also exclusive use, so it's just you and your people. For a relaxed couple who don't want to share the grounds with another wedding, that matters.

The barns, room by room

According to the venue's website, the main spaces are:

  • The Main Barn, where ceremonies take place
  • The Wheelhouse, a snug space
  • The Bar
  • The Courtyard, for drinks and fresh air
  • The Dining Room, for the wedding breakfast

The barns keep their traditional features. That's lovely to photograph, because the old stone and timber give your photos warmth without me having to add anything.

Guest numbers

The venue's website says it welcomes up to 140 guests for the ceremony and dining, with space for more at the evening reception.

Ways to hire the venue

The venue's weddings page lists three options:

  • Full Day Hire: exclusive barn hire with tables, chairs, linen, cutlery, crockery and glassware, plus food for the drinks reception, wedding breakfast and evening, drinks for the reception, meal and speeches, five items from the hire list and a Front of House team on the day.
  • Extended Hire: the day before as well as the wedding day, handy if you want to bring lots of decor and set it up yourselves.
  • Twilight & Evening: a later start, for couples who want a smaller daytime and a good party.

For prices, ask the venue directly or download their brochure. I don't quote venue prices here, because they change.

Staying on site

The venue's accommodation page says the Farmhouse sleeps up to nine guests in four doubles and a single, with plenty of space to get ready. The Laundry Cottage sleeps two, and is a lovely spot for the two of you on your wedding night.

From a photographer's point of view, getting ready on site makes for a calmer morning. I can capture the build-up and then walk straight over to the barns with you, with no rushing between cars.

Bringing your dog

The venue's viewings page says dogs can come for a short time on your wedding day, but not to viewings. If your dog is part of the family, plan when they'll arrive and who'll take them home. Ten minutes with your dog in the fields can give you some of my favourite photos of the whole day.

How I photograph a day here

I document your day like a friend who's always one step ahead. I'll carry the flowers, pin the buttonholes, and know when you've had enough of the camera.

At Thirsk Lodge Barns that usually means:

  • Morning: relaxed getting-ready photos, ideally in the Farmhouse
  • Ceremony: I stay out of the way and let it unfold
  • Drinks in the Courtyard: natural photos of your guests while you catch up with everyone
  • Couple portraits: a short wander round the grounds and countryside, then back to your drink
  • Evening: first dance and the party, until the light and the night wind down

The gardens at the front of the house are one of my favourite spots for portraits here. They're private, so you can relax, and they give us amazing backdrops.

Seeing the venue for yourselves

The venue's viewings page says it runs Viewing Evenings with the Ceremony Barn and Dining Room set up, so you can see it wedding-ready. The viewings page has the latest dates and how to book.

Good to know

  • Parking: the venue's guest FAQs say there's plenty of parking on site. Cars can stay overnight at your own risk and must be collected by 10am the next day.
  • Finish time: the bar closes at midnight, and guests must be off site by 12.30am. Book taxis a few weeks ahead, as it's a rural venue.
  • Bar: fully stocked and licensed, with a Challenge 25 policy.
  • Name: since 18 June you'll see the name Newsham alongside Thirsk Lodge Barns. The venue says nothing changes for couples: same venue, same owners, same team.
