Thirsk Lodge Barns in one minute: a barn wedding venue on a working farm just outside Thirsk, North Yorkshire (YO7 4DB), with exclusive use for your wedding day. You marry in the licensed Main Barn, have drinks in the Bar and the olive-tree courtyard, and eat in a separate Dining Room, so there's no room turnaround. It takes up to 140 for the ceremony and meal, plus up to 60 more in the evening. Dogs are welcome for the ceremony and a few photos. I've photographed a wedding at Thirsk Lodge Barns. My full-day collections start at £1,695, and £100 holds your date.

Getting married at Thirsk Lodge Barns

Guests seated for a civil ceremony in the oak-beamed Main Barn at Thirsk Lodge Barns

A Thirsk Lodge Barns wedding feels like a big family party on a farm, in the best possible way. The barns sit among fields of grass and wild flowers just outside the market town of Thirsk. There's a farmhouse with a Georgian front door, a brick courtyard and plenty of old trees, and your wedding is the only thing happening that day. The venue's words: "the venue and grounds are all yours".

The layout is what makes it work so well. You marry in the Main Barn, then everyone moves through to the Bar and the courtyard for drinks, and on to a separate Dining Room for the meal. Nobody has to wait outside while a room gets turned around, and the Main Barn becomes the evening space for the band or DJ and your first dance.

Numbers are clear, too. The venue says it takes up to 140 people during the day for your ceremony and meal, and up to 60 more for the evening. The minimum is 60 adults Monday to Thursday and 80 on Fridays and Saturdays.

Some of your people can stay on site. The original Farmhouse and the Laundry Cottage sleep 11 between them, and there's more nearby at Woodhill Grange, half a mile away, and 35 Kirkgate in Thirsk, about a mile away.

I've photographed a wedding at Thirsk Lodge Barns, a spring wedding with blue sky over the farmhouse, a packed courtyard and a walk through the fields as the light dropped. I'm based in Guisborough and cover the whole of North Yorkshire, so there's no travel fee.

Who it suits: couples who want a relaxed, rustic day with a proper party, a venue that's all theirs, and a day that flows without waiting around.

Less of a fit if: you want a grand country house or a hotel with dozens of rooms, or a photographer who spends hours on posed portraits. I mostly stay out of the way and photograph what actually happens.

Capacities, prices and packages change, so check current details with the venue directly.

The Main Barn ceremony

Groom carrying a small child in a white dress down the aisle of the Main Barn at Thirsk Lodge Barns

The Main Barn is licensed for civil ceremonies, and it's set up beautifully for photographs. Behind the oak ceremony table there's a wall of fairy lights, and above you hang iron hoops that your florist can dress. The venue says they "look incredible for those all important photos", and they're right: it gives every ceremony picture a warm, glowing background.

At the other end of the barn, two grand wooden doors open from the VIP room straight into the aisle. That's your entrance. I'll be at the front, facing the doors, so I catch the moment they open and the faces turning to see you. Then I move quietly to the side before the vows and stay put. I don't wander about during the ceremony; it's your moment, not mine.

Large windows look out over the fields and wild flowers, so there's good natural light. There's also a mezzanine, which the venue suggests for readers or singers, and which seats around 20 guests in a full barn. It's also the venue's tip for "your photographer to capture a group photo from!" I'd agree. One big photo of everyone looking up at the mezzanine takes about two minutes and is often the one that ends up on the fridge.

Afterwards, the walk back down the aisle is one of the best moments of the day to photograph. Take it slowly, look at your guests rather than the floor, and don't be afraid to stop halfway for a kiss. Everyone will cheer, and it makes a much better picture than a brisk march to the Bar. At the wedding I photographed, the groom walked down the aisle carrying a little one in a white dress, and the whole barn was smiling.

A few things that help on the day:

Ask your registrar about their rules on photography. Most are relaxed, but they all differ.

Ask your florist to dress the hoops and the end of the aisle. They're in almost every ceremony photograph.

Give your guests a moment to put their phones away. You'll see their faces, not their screens.

The best photo spots at Thirsk Lodge Barns

Everything here is close together, so twenty minutes of portraits gives you a lot of variety and you're back with your guests before your drink gets warm.

The courtyard and the olive tree

The courtyard houses a 200-year-old Spanish olive tree and, in the venue's words, "is sheltered and gets the sun all day long". It's where the confetti happens, where guests gather for drinks, and where I do a lot of my quiet documentary work. There are outdoor games and fire pits for later, too; the venue says bring sparklers and marshmallows.

Brick archways and black barn doors

The old brick archways and the black barn doors give you texture and clean lines just steps from the courtyard. They're great for a full-length portrait, and the archway frames you naturally.

The farmhouse door

The farmhouse's Georgian front door is a lovely, simple spot for a portrait of the two of you, and for a photo with your parents.

The fields at golden hour

The fields around the barns are the best thing here for evening light. Ten minutes out there after the meal, as the sun drops, gives you warm, soft photographs that feel properly North Yorkshire.

Old trees and the meadow

The old trees in the grounds give shade on a bright day, and the meadow is lovely for a walk-and-talk portrait. The black-and-white photograph here is one of those walks.

Getting ready in the farmhouse

The Farmhouse sleeps up to nine and, in the venue's words, "has plenty of space for guests to get ready". It's where the morning of the wedding I photographed began: hair and make-up, a bridal room with good window light, and a quiet moment between the bride and her mum. The youngest member of the family was part of the morning too, and unplanned moments like that are often the photographs couples love most.

What helps the photographs most is simple. Choose the room with the biggest window. Keep one corner clear of bags, coffee cups and phone chargers. Put the dress, shoes, rings and any letters together, so I can photograph the details in ten quiet minutes. Then I can spend the rest of the morning on the people, which is the bit you'll care about in twenty years.

The venue doesn't allow pets in the accommodation, so if your dog's part of the day, have someone bring them for the ceremony.

The Main Barn, under the fairy lights

No turnaround, more time. Because the Dining Room is separate, the hour after the ceremony is all yours. That's when the hugs, the laughter and the best candid photographs happen.

Seasons and weather. In spring, as at the wedding I photographed, the fields are green, the light is fresh and evenings are getting longer. Summer gives you the longest golden hour and sunny courtyard drinks. In autumn the light goes golden early, so an early-afternoon ceremony is a good idea; my autumn wedding guide has the sunset times. In winter it's dark by about 4pm, so I'd do portraits right after the ceremony and let the fairy lights and fire pits do the rest.

What I'm doing during the day

In the morning I photograph getting ready and the details. Through the drinks reception I'm mostly unseen, photographing people being themselves. After the portraits you're back with your guests. During the meal I step back, then I'm ready for the speeches, the cake and the first dance.

If it rains

Thirsk Lodge Barns is built for British weather. The venue says its Bar and courtyard "make the perfect setting for your drinks reception no matter what the British weather decides to do", and Hitched describes "a layout for all weathers". The Bar has a whole wall that opens onto the courtyard, with bi-fold windows the length of the room, so even if you can't go outside you still see the olive tree. The courtyard also has an open stable area with heaters.

The Dining Room is separate, so nobody's huddled in a corner waiting. The Wheelhouse, a snug room with meadow views, is a good escape for children or anyone who needs a sit down.

For portraits, the brick archways and barn doors work in a light shower, and soft grey light is kind to faces. Bring a couple of clear umbrellas, keep the family photo list short, and leave the rest to me. I'll watch the sky and we'll nip out for the fields the moment it brightens.

A few planning tips. If you're bringing lots of your own décor, the Two Day Hire takes the pressure off the morning. Book your registrar as soon as you have a date. Tell the venue early if your dog's coming, so they can plan around the canapés. And send me the sunset time, or let me look it up, so we can keep ten minutes free for the fields.

After dark. Once the first dance is done, the courtyard fire pits come into their own. A few photos of friends round the fire, sparklers if you've brought them, and the barn glowing behind: they're some of my favourite pictures of a wedding evening, because nobody's posing any more.
