Dalton Old Pump House weddings: a photographer's guide

Quick answer: Dalton Old Pump House is an exclusive-use, Grade II* listed Victorian pumping station at Dalton-le-Dale, near Seaham in County Durham. Ceremonies take place in the Engine Room, among the original 1873 steam engines, for up to 128 seated guests. The wedding breakfast and evening are in the Boiler Room, and drinks are on the rose-planted Terrace. I've photographed weddings at Dalton Old Pump House.

Walking into the Engine Room for the first time, the scale of it stopped me: huge pillars, iron beams and wooden floors high above, softened by chandeliers. This guide covers what couples ask me most about Dalton Old Pump House: the spaces, where the photos happen, what to do about the light indoors and how a day usually runs.

About Dalton Old Pump House

Dalton Old Pump House was built between 1873 and 1879 by the engineer Thomas Hawksley, and the venue says it was restored from near-dereliction. It's Grade II* listed, and the venue describes over 80 crystal chandeliers set against the original Victorian brickwork and ironwork.

It's exclusive use, so the building and grounds are yours for the whole day. Dalton Old Pump House is on Stockton Road, Dalton-le-Dale, Seaham, SR7 8RQ, just off the A19, and the venue says it's easy to reach from Newcastle, Sunderland, Durham and Middlesbrough.

The spaces at Dalton Old Pump House

The Bridal Suite

The day starts in the Bridal Suite, which the venue describes as a calm, light-filled room set aside for getting ready.

The Engine Room

The Engine Room is where ceremonies happen. It holds the original steam engines from 1873, and seats up to 128 guests, or 140 with some standing. The venue says natural light comes through high, cathedral-style windows. If you're marrying in church, the Engine Room becomes the drinks reception space instead.

The Boiler Room

The Boiler Room hosts the wedding breakfast and the evening party, with chandeliers, ironwork and Victorian brick.

The Terrace

The Terrace is a sheltered garden planted with David Austin roses, used for drinks receptions and quieter moments between the formalities.

The Engine Room

The engines, pillars and chandeliers make the Engine Room the most photographed space in the building. It's dark-toned, so I work with the window light and the chandeliers rather than flooding it with flash, which keeps the warmth of the room.

The Terrace

The Terrace gives softer, greener backgrounds and fresh air, which is a nice contrast to the industrial spaces inside. It's an easy place for a few relaxed portraits during the drinks.

The tower and the steps

From outside, the building keeps its working pump-house look: no grand lawn, just the size of the tower and the concrete steps up to the door. That makes a striking backdrop for a couple portrait or a big group photo.

The Boiler Room after dark

Once the chandeliers are lit and the dancing starts, the Boiler Room gives warm, atmospheric evening photos.

How I photograph a Dalton Old Pump House wedding

My style is documentary. I don't line people up or ask them to perform. I photograph what happens: the nerves in the morning, the reactions during the vows, the speeches and the dance floor. Group photos are kept short and planned with you beforehand.

I photographed Kate and Ross's wedding at Dalton Old Pump House in May 2022, and you can see the whole day in their Dalton Old Pump House wedding story. There's more about the venue on my Dalton Old Pump House page.

What if it rains at Dalton Old Pump House?

The ceremony, wedding breakfast and evening are all indoors at Dalton Old Pump House, so rain mainly affects the drinks on the Terrace and outdoor group photos. The Engine Room's windows and chandeliers mean there's always somewhere with good light for portraits indoors.
